Installing the 10VBS550 48V 550Ah forklift battery requires a battery changing station with a powered battery extractor or overhead crane — the complete battery set weighs approximately 860kg and must never be manually handled. The battery is installed into the forklift’s battery compartment and connected via the Anderson SB series high-current power connector or equivalent forklift-specific connector. The metal battery box dimensions of 1080×670×590mm must be verified against the forklift’s battery compartment dimensions before ordering to ensure fitment. After installation, check all 24 individual 2V cells for proper electrolyte level — the electrolyte must cover the lead plates by approximately 6-12mm. Fill only with distilled or deionized water, never tap water, as mineral content in tap water permanently damages the lead plates. After the initial charge, verify the specific gravity of each cell with a hydrometer — all cells should read within 0.030 points of each other at full charge (1.275-1.295 specific gravity). A cell reading significantly below the others indicates a weak or sulfated cell that will limit the entire battery’s capacity and runtime. For multi-shift forklift operations, the battery should be equalization charged weekly to prevent sulfation stratification — the accumulation of heavier acid at the bottom of cells that causes uneven plate wear and reduced capacity.
