Forklift Driver Shaft: Drive Shafts, Half Shafts & Axle Shafts for Hangcha Komatsu HELI

The driver shaft — also called drive shaft, propeller shaft, half shaft, or axle shaft — transmits rotational power from one drivetrain component to another. In IC forklifts, the main drive shaft connects the transmission output to the drive axle input through universal joints that accommodate angular movement. The axle shafts (half shafts) inside the axle housing transmit torque from the differential side gears to the wheel hubs. A bent drive shaft causes driveline vibration that destroys U-joints, transmission output bearings, and pinion bearings in a cascade failure. A twisted or sheared axle shaft means complete loss of drive to one wheel — the forklift won’t move under load.

When to Replace Driver Shafts:
• Vibration that increases with speed, felt through the seat and steering wheel → Drive shaft is bent or unbalanced. U-joints may also be worn. Inspect shaft for visible damage or missing balance weights
• Clunking noise when shifting from forward to reverse → Excessive play in the U-joints or slip yoke splines. The driveline has rotational slack that clunks when torque direction reverses
• Clicking or knocking from the axle area that increases with wheel speed → Axle shaft is twisted or fatigued. The shaft is developing microfractures that will eventually shear
• Grease slung in a radial pattern around the U-joint area → U-joint seal has failed. Grease has been thrown out. Replace U-joints or complete shaft before they run dry and seize
• One drive wheel has no power — the other spins freely with a grinding noise → Axle shaft has sheared at the spline or mid-shaft. The differential sends all power to the broken side
