Forklift Carbon Brush: DC Motor Commutator Brushes for Steering, Hydraulic Pump & Drive Motors

The carbon brush is the sliding electrical contact that transfers current from the stationary wiring to the rotating commutator inside every DC traction, steering, and hydraulic pump motor on electric forklifts. Carbon brushes are designed to wear — they’re the sacrificial component that protects the expensive commutator. When a brush wears below minimum length, the spring loses tension and the brush bounces off the commutator at high RPM, creating electrical arcing that burns copper commutator segments and permanently damages the motor. A $3 brush replaced on time prevents a $500 motor rebuild.

Types of Carbon Brushes:

J201 Copper-Carbon Brush (8×22×22mm) — Copper-infused carbon compound for higher current capacity. Used in electric forklift traction and pump motors requiring sustained high-current delivery. Not interchangeable with smaller brushes in the same motor — always match the original brush dimensions.

J230 Hydraulic Pump Brush (8.8×19.2×16mm) — Replacement for the hydraulic oil pump DC motor that powers the lift circuit on electric forklifts. The hydraulic pump motor runs intermittently but draws high current during each lift — the brush must handle surge current without excessive wear.

LL10-H201G Steering Brush (8×30×25mm) — Hyster steering pump motor brush with CE certification. Steering motor brushes operate at lower current but higher duty cycles than hydraulic pump brushes, requiring a balanced wear rate for consistent steering response through the full brush life.

When to Replace Carbon Brushes:

• Brush length is below the minimum wear line (typically 1/3 of original length) → Replace. Continued use beyond the minimum damages the commutator.
• Motor runs intermittently — starts and stops randomly without control input → Brushes are bouncing or worn to the point of intermittent contact. Replace immediately.
• Excessive sparking visible through the motor brush inspection windows → Brushes are worn, springs are fatigued, or commutator is damaged. Inspect and replace brushes first.
• Motor loses power under load but runs normally with no load → Brushes can’t deliver full current at the worn contact area. Replace.
• Uneven wear — one brush significantly shorter than others in the same motor → Brush holder alignment issue or commutator runout. Inspect motor and replace all brushes as a set.
