The foot brake pedal is the operator’s primary braking interface — it converts foot pressure into hydraulic pressure that stops a 3-8 ton forklift carrying a load. A worn pedal assembly with sloppy bushings creates dead travel where the first inch of pedal movement doesn’t engage the brakes, adding critical reaction time in emergency stops. A loose or broken return spring leaves the brake partially applied, overheating the drums and burning through brake shoes and fuel. The foot parking brake provides positive mechanical engagement that holds the forklift stationary on inclines without relying on hydraulic pressure that bleeds off over time.

When to Replace Foot Brake Components:

• Brake pedal has excessive free play — first inch of travel does nothing → Pivot bushings are worn or the pedal arm is bent. Replace the assembly
• Brake pedal doesn’t return fully — stays partially depressed after releasing → Return spring is broken or fatigued. Replace spring or complete assembly
• Squeaking or grinding noise from the pedal pivot when pressed → Pivot bushing is dry or worn. Lubrication may temporarily help; replacement is permanent fix
• Parking brake won’t hold the forklift on an incline → Ratchet mechanism is worn or the cable has stretched beyond adjustment. Inspect both the pedal assembly and the cable
• Pedal pad is worn smooth or missing → Reduced foot grip, especially with wet or oily boots. Replace the pedal pad
