A forklift hydraulic pump uses two meshing gears inside a close-tolerance housing. As the gears rotate, oil is trapped in the spaces between gear teeth and the housing wall, carried from the inlet side to the outlet side, and forced out under pressure. The pump output flow is directly proportional to engine speed — at idle, the pump produces minimum flow, and at full throttle, maximum flow. Over thousands of operating hours, the gear teeth, shaft bushings, and housing bore all wear. As internal clearances increase, oil leaks back from the high-pressure outlet side to the low-pressure inlet side instead of being delivered to the cylinders.
