The cylinder liner — also called cylinder sleeve — is the replaceable cast iron tube pressed or slipped into the engine block cylinder bore that provides the precision wear surface for the piston rings. The liner bore finish directly determines oil consumption, compression, and blow-by. A worn, scored, or out-of-round liner causes blue smoke, power loss, hard starting, and crankcase pressurization from blow-by. Liners are categorized as wet liners (direct coolant contact on the outside of the liner — used in Xinchai 490, Toyota 2Y, Isuzu C240) or dry liners (pressed into a solid block bore without coolant contact). When one liner is worn beyond the service limit, replace all liners as a set to maintain even cylinder wear and compression balance across the engine.

When to Replace Cylinder Liners:
• Blue smoke from the exhaust and oil consumption above 1 quart per 8 operating hours → Worn liners allow oil past the rings. Measure liner bore for out-of-round and taper
• Low compression on one or more cylinders (below 300 psi on diesel, or more than 10% variation between cylinders) → Worn liner bore or ring seal. Perform a leak-down test to confirm
• Visible scoring, vertical scratches, or glazing on the liner bore surface when the cylinder head is removed → Liner surface is damaged. Replace liner, piston, and rings together
• Coolant in the engine oil (milky appearance on dipstick) with no external leak → Wet liner O-ring seal has failed. Replace all liner O-rings and liners
• Engine being rebuilt after any lower-end failure → Replace ALL liners. A new piston and ring set on a worn liner will never seat properly
