The hydraulic system is what gives a forklift its lifting power. Every pound of cargo raised to height — every tilt, sideshift, and steering correction — travels through hydraulic fluid pressurized by the pump, directed by valves, and converted to mechanical force by cylinders. A leaking cylinder drips oil on the floor and loses lifting capacity. A worn hydraulic pump delivers reduced flow, making every function slower. A stuck relief valve either fails to protect the system from overpressure or dumps pressure prematurely, preventing lifting altogether. Hydraulic components operate at 2,000-3,000 PSI with internal seals and clearances that demand clean fluid and correct tolerances.

Forklift Hydraulic Pump — The gear-type pump that draws hydraulic oil from the tank and pressurizes it for the entire hydraulic system. Hydraulic pumps are constant-displacement on most forklifts — they deliver a fixed volume of oil per revolution regardless of demand. Excess flow is bypassed through the relief valve back to the tank. A worn pump produces reduced flow (slow lifting, slow tilting) and may generate a whining noise that changes pitch with engine RPM. Causes of premature pump wear: contaminated oil (abrasive particles score the gear faces and housing bore), cavitation from restricted suction line or clogged suction strainer, and running with low fluid level. Forklift Lift Cylinder — The main hydraulic cylinder(s) that raise and lower the mast and carriage. Lift cylinders are typically single-acting (pressure extends, gravity retracts) and mounted vertically in the mast channels. A leaking lift cylinder drips oil down the mast and loses lift speed — the load may also drift down when the control valve is in neutral, indicating internal piston seal leakage. Forklift Tilt Cylinder — Double-acting cylinders that tilt the mast forward and backward. Tilt cylinders are mounted between the chassis and the mast and operate under continuous load when the mast is tilted. Rod seal leakage causes oil to weep past the rod wiper — a few drops per cycle is normal; a continuous stream means immediate seal replacement. Forklift Side Shift Cylinder — Double-acting cylinder mounted horizontally on the carriage that moves the forks left and right for precise load positioning without repositioning the entire forklift. Side shift cylinders have relatively short strokes (100-200mm) but operate under side-loading from off-center loads. Rod seal failure is the most common issue due to side-load-induced uneven wear.
Forklift Power Steering Cylinder — Double-acting cylinder connected to the steering linkage that provides hydraulic assist for steering effort. A leaking steering cylinder causes heavy steering (reduced assist), uneven steering effort left vs. right, or oil dripping from the steering axle area. Power steering cylinders are safety-critical — loss of steering assist at speed can cause loss of control.
Forklift Multi-Way Valve (Hydraulic Control Valve) — The operator-controlled valve bank with 2-4 spools that directs hydraulic flow to the lift, tilt, sideshift, and attachment circuits. Each spool has three positions: raise/extend (pressure to cylinder), neutral (ports blocked, cylinder holds position), and lower/retract (pressure to opposite cylinder port or gravity return). A worn spool or valve body bore causes internal leakage — the cylinder drifts from its set position. Spool centering spring failure causes the handle not to return to neutral, so the function continues after the operator releases the lever — a serious safety hazard. Forklift Directional Valve Parts — Individual spools, seals, centering springs, detent kits, and handle linkages for multi-way control valves. Forklift Pressure Relief Valve — A spring-loaded safety valve that limits maximum hydraulic system pressure by opening and returning fluid to the tank when pressure exceeds the set point. The relief valve is the primary overpressure protection for the entire hydraulic system — without it, a deadheaded pump would continue building pressure until a hose bursts or the pump housing fractures. Relief valves must be set to the pressure specified on the forklift data plate (typically 1,500-2,500 PSI) using a pressure gauge at the test port — never adjust by feel. Forklift Speed Limit Valve — A flow control valve installed in the lift cylinder circuit that limits the maximum lowering speed of the mast, preventing the load from free-falling if a hose bursts. Also called a velocity fuse or hose burst valve. When flow through the valve exceeds a preset rate (indicating a burst hose downstream), the valve snaps closed, locking the cylinder and preventing the load from dropping. Forklift Hydraulic Pipe — Rigid steel hydraulic tubing and flexible hydraulic hoses that connect the pump, valves, and cylinders. Steel tubing is used where lines are fixed (along the mast channels, on the chassis). Flexible hoses are used where movement occurs (tilt cylinder connections, hose reels). A pinhole leak in a high-pressure hydraulic line produces a jet of oil at 2,000+ PSI — this jet can penetrate skin and inject oil into tissue, requiring immediate emergency medical treatment. Forklift Hydraulic Connector (Fitting) — JIC 37° flare fittings, BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel), BSPT (tapered), NPT, ORFS (O-ring face seal), and metric fittings that connect hydraulic lines to pumps, valves, and cylinders. Mixing incompatible fitting types (e.g., JIC with BSPP) causes leaks and fitting damage. Always match the fitting type to the component port — the thread pitch and sealing method must be identical. Forklift Orbital Steering Unit — Also called a hydrostatic steering unit or Orbitrol (Danfoss brand name). The steering unit is a rotary valve and gerotor pump combination that directs hydraulic flow to the steering cylinder proportional to steering wheel rotation. When the engine is off or the hydraulic pump fails, the orbital unit acts as a manual pump, allowing steering without power assist. A worn steering unit causes: excessive steering wheel free play, uneven steering effort, or the steering wheel continuing to turn after reaching full lock (internal leakage).
