The drive axle housing is the largest structural component in the forklift drivetrain — a cast iron or steel enclosure that houses the differential carrier, axle shafts, and final drive gears while supporting the entire rear axle load. A bent or cracked axle housing is typically caused by forklift collision, tip-over, or decades of heavy operation on rough terrain. When the housing deforms, the ring and pinion gears lose precise mesh alignment and destroy themselves within hours. Axle housing replacement is one of the most labor-intensive forklift repairs — requiring complete axle disassembly including differential removal, axle shaft extraction, wheel hub disassembly, and brake component removal before the housing can be swapped.

When to Replace the Axle Housing:
• Visible crack anywhere on the housing casting → Structural failure. The crack will propagate under load. Replace immediately — welding cast iron axle housings is not safe or reliable
• Gear oil leaks from a crack or porous area in the housing, not from a seal → Housing is cracked through to the internal oil cavity. Replacement required
• Forklift tracks crooked or dog-tracks (rear axle misaligned with the frame) → Housing is bent from impact. The differential gears are running misaligned and will fail
• Mounting bolt holes are elongated, stripped, or cracked → The housing has been moving against the frame. Bolts cannot maintain proper torque. Replace housing
• Bearing journal surfaces are scored, galled, or out-of-round → Bearings cannot seat properly. The axle shaft will run with runout, destroying seals and bearings
