Forklift Fork Pin: The Load-Bearing Retaining Pin That Secures Forks to the Carriage
A fork pin is the heavy-duty steel retaining pin that locks each fork to the forklift carriage bar, preventing lateral movement, forward slip, and fork detachment during load handling. Despite its simple appearance, the fork pin is subjected to the full dynamic load of the fork-and-payload assembly during acceleration, braking, and pallet entry — a worn, bent, or undersized pin can shear under load, causing catastrophic fork separation. Fork pins are typically forged from medium-carbon alloy steel with a hardened surface to resist the abrasive wear caused by constant micro-movement between the fork hook and the carriage bar. For multi-fork operations where forks are repositioned frequently, the pins endure repeated insertion and removal cycles that gradually wear the pin diameter and the carriage hole — a loose pin allows fork movement that accelerates carriage bar wear.

When to Replace / Common Symptoms:
• Fork rattles or clunks against the carriage during direction changes → Worn pin diameter or elongated carriage hole
• Pin is difficult to insert or remove → Bent pin shaft or burred pin head from hammer installation
• Visible wear groove or necking on the pin shaft → Fatigue cracking imminent — replace immediately
• Retaining clip or cotter pin is missing or deformed → Pin can work loose and fall out during operation
• Rust or corrosion on pin surface → Galvanic corrosion between pin and carriage — replace pin and clean carriage bore
