Forklift Directional Switch: Forward/Reverse, Turn Signal & Ignition Switches

The directional switch is the control the operator uses every single time the forklift moves — forward, reverse, turn signals, and ignition all pass through the switch assembly on the steering column or dashboard. When the switch fails, the forklift may refuse to go forward but reverse works fine, or vice versa. Turn signals may not activate. The ignition may not engage. A $30 switch failure can park a $30,000 forklift until a replacement arrives.

Kingstream supplies replacement directional and combination switches for Toyota, Komatsu, HELI, TCM, CAT, Doosan, and Nissan forklifts. Every switch is tested for contact continuity in all positions, spring return function, and mechanical detent feel before shipment, backed by a 6-month warranty.

Types of Forklift Switches:

Directional Switch (F/R Switch) — 3-wire or 4-wire column-mounted switch that sends forward or reverse signals to the controller. Common models: JK352 (HELI electric forklifts), JK805A. A failed F/R switch typically affects only one direction — if the forklift moves in reverse but not forward, test the forward contact first.

Combination Switch — Multi-function column switch combining turn signals, headlights, horn, and wiper controls in one unit. Models: JK802A, JK803XL, JK806AA. A combination switch that only has one failed function can sometimes be repaired; but if multiple functions fail simultaneously, replace the entire assembly.

Ignition / Key Switch — The key-operated switch that powers up the electrical system and engages the starter. Models: JK406C, JK412, JK421. A worn key switch causes intermittent power loss that feels like a dead battery.

Safety / Neutral Switch — Prevents the engine from starting unless the directional control is in neutral. Models: JK-208A, Z8750-0611B. A failed neutral switch prevents starting entirely — the engine won’t crank.

When to Replace Your Directional Switch:

Forklift moves in one direction but not the other → Switch contact for that direction has failed; verify with multimeter, replace switch
Turn signals work intermittently or not at all → Combination switch contacts worn; clean if accessible, replace if sealed
Key must be jiggled to start the engine → Ignition switch contacts worn; replace before you’re stranded
Switch feels loose, sloppy, or doesn’t return to center → Internal spring or detent mechanism broken; replace
Visible burning, melting, or corrosion at the connector → High-resistance contact has overheated; replace switch and repair the connector
