The transmission input plate — also called flex plate, drive plate, or torque converter input plate — is the steel disc that bolts between the engine crankshaft flange and the torque converter (on automatic/powershift transmissions) or clutch pressure plate (on manual transmissions), transmitting 100% of the engine’s torque from the crankshaft to the transmission input shaft. The input plate serves three critical functions simultaneously: it transmits torque (the plate must withstand the engine’s full torque output multiplied by the torque converter’s stall ratio, which can exceed 2.5× engine torque during stall conditions), it provides the bolt circle pattern that mounts the torque converter or clutch assembly (the bolt pattern must match precisely — a single misaligned bolt hole prevents installation entirely), and it acts as a flexible coupling that absorbs minor angular misalignment and axial movement between the engine block and transmission bell housing (the “flex” in flex plate comes from the thin steel disc’s ability to deflect slightly under load, accommodating the manufacturing tolerances of two separate castings bolted together across a gasketed joint). A cracked input plate — typically from fatigue cracking that starts at a bolt hole and radiates outward — produces a metallic clicking or knocking sound that changes with engine RPM. The crack propagates with every crankshaft revolution (at 2,500 RPM, the plate cycles from tension to compression 42 times per second), and a completely fractured plate disconnects the engine from the transmission — the engine runs but no power reaches the drive wheels. Kingstream supplies 5 input plate product lines covering FD20~30-12/14, CPCD40/45R, CPCD35, and universal 3-ton forklift applications.

When to Replace Input Plates:
• Metallic clicking, ticking, or knocking sound from the bell housing area that changes with engine RPM but not with gear selection → The input plate is cracked at a bolt hole. The sound is the crack faces rubbing against each other as the plate flexes. Replace the plate immediately — a complete fracture is imminent
• Starter motor spins but the engine does not crank, or the starter makes a grinding noise without engagement → The ring gear teeth on the input plate (if the ring gear is welded to the plate) are damaged or the plate is fractured at the center hub. Replace the plate
• Vibration that increases with engine RPM, felt through the chassis and steering wheel → The input plate is warped (from overheating during a previous transmission failure) or has a missing or loose bolt. Check bolt torque and replace the plate if warped
• Transmission has been removed for any reason (clutch replacement, torque converter replacement, engine rebuild) → The input plate is 100% accessible with zero additional labor. Inspect the plate for cracks around bolt holes (use dye penetrant or magnetic particle inspection) and replace if any cracks are found — it’s a $10-40 part that can prevent a $2,000+ transmission repair
• Flex plate bolts are found loose during inspection → The bolt holes are likely elongated from the bolts hammering against the plate under load. The plate cannot be aligned correctly with elongated holes. Replace the plate and use new bolts with thread locker
