Forklift Brake Drum: Cast Iron Drum Assembly for HELI TCM Toyota Forklift Brake Systems

A forklift brake drum is the cast iron rotating component that the brake shoes press against to slow and stop the forklift — it converts friction into heat during every braking event. When the drum wears oversize, develops hot spots, or cracks, braking becomes ineffective and the shoes wear unevenly. Kingstream stocks replacement forklift brake drums for HELI, Toyota, TCM, and Hangcha forklifts from 1.5 to 8 ton capacity. Every drum is inspected for inner diameter, roundness, and casting integrity before shipment.

Brake drums are manufactured from gray cast iron for its combination of wear resistance, heat dissipation, and vibration damping. The drum inner surface is precision-machined to a specific diameter and surface finish — correct surface roughness is critical for proper brake shoe bedding and consistent friction coefficient. As the drum wears, the inner diameter increases, reducing the contact area with the brake shoes and requiring the wheel cylinder pistons to extend further. A forklift drum brake that has been machined beyond its maximum allowable diameter has reduced structural strength — the thinner drum wall flexes under braking pressure, causing pedal pulsation and reduced stopping power. The 24453-02131 is the standard brake drum for HELI 3-ton forklifts, while the A300-110004 covers the A-series and the 30HB-110002 is specified for 30HB series machines.

When replacing forklift brake drums, always replace drums and shoes as a matched pair on the same axle — a new drum with worn shoes reduces braking effectiveness, while new shoes on a worn drum accelerate shoe wear and may not bed correctly. Measure the new drum inner diameter before installation and compare to the specification — an oversize drum from the factory must be returned. Check the drum mounting face and stud holes for damage that would cause runout. After installation, measure drum runout with a dial indicator — excessive runout causes pedal pulsation.

Signs Your Brake Drum Needs Replacement

A worn forklift brake drum produces symptoms during braking: pedal pulsation felt as a rhythmic pushing back against the operator foot indicates an out-of-round drum or uneven wear. A scraping or grinding noise during braking means the drum inner surface has been scored by worn brake shoes that have worn through the friction material to the metal backing. Visible cracks radiating from the drum center or bolt holes are a rejection criterion — a cracked drum can fracture under braking load. A blued or discolored drum surface indicates severe overheating that has altered the cast iron metallurgy, reducing hardness and wear resistance.

Quality Control at Kingstream

Every forklift brake drum we ship is measured for inner diameter at multiple points to confirm roundness and diameter within specification. The mounting face is checked for flatness, and stud holes are verified for correct bolt circle diameter. Casting surfaces are visually inspected for cracks, porosity, and sand inclusions. You receive a forklift brake drum that runs true and provides consistent braking — not a drum with an out-of-round condition that pulses the pedal from the first stop.
