The forklift orbitrol — also called a hydrostatic steering unit, rotary steering valve, or steering control unit — is the hydraulic component that converts steering wheel rotation into proportional oil flow to the steering cylinder, eliminating mechanical steering linkage entirely. When the operator turns the steering wheel, the orbitrol’s internal gerotor metering section and rotary spool valve direct pressurized hydraulic oil to the appropriate side of the steering cylinder with a volume precisely matching the steering wheel angle. This provides smooth, low-effort power steering regardless of load weight.
