Forklift Charging Pump: Hydraulic Supply Pump for Powershift Transmissions

The forklift charging pump — also called a charge pump or transmission supply pump — is a gear-type hydraulic pump driven directly from the transmission input shaft that provides pressurized oil for three critical transmission functions: clutch pack engagement pressure, gear train lubrication, and torque converter feed. Without a functioning charging pump, the powershift transmission has zero hydraulic pressure — no clutch engagement, no lubrication, and immediate damage upon engine start. When to Replace Your Charging Pump — Common Symptoms
• Complete loss of forward and reverse drive → Pump has failed, zero system pressure reaching the clutch packs
• Delayed or sluggish clutch engagement after shifting → Worn pump gears cannot build full operating pressure quickly
• Transmission overheating within 10-15 minutes of operation → Insufficient fluid flow through the cooler circuit
• Whining or whirring noise from the transmission pump cavity that increases with engine RPM → Worn gear teeth or cavitation from restricted suction line
• Metal particles visible in the transmission fluid filter → Pump gear or housing wear debris circulating through the system
