Forklift Brake Wheel Cylinder: Drum Brake Hydraulic Actuation 1T-15T — Toyota HELI Hyundai TCM
The brake wheel cylinder is the hydraulic actuator at each wheel that converts brake fluid pressure from the master cylinder into mechanical force pushing the brake shoes against the drum. Inside the wheel cylinder, two opposing pistons with rubber seals ride in a precision-bored cast iron housing. When the seals harden from heat and age, brake fluid leaks past the pistons, the shoes get contaminated with fluid (reducing friction to near zero), and that wheel loses braking — a dangerous condition because the forklift pulls hard to the opposite side during braking. A $25 wheel cylinder prevents a brake fluid-contaminated $40 brake shoe set and the labor to clean and rebuild the entire drum assembly.

When to Replace Wheel Cylinders:
• Brake fluid leaking from the rubber dust boots at the cylinder ends → Internal piston seals have failed. Fluid is contaminating the brake shoes. Replace cylinder and shoes together
• One wheel locks up or brakes drag — that wheel is hotter than the others after driving → The wheel cylinder piston is stuck in the extended position, keeping the shoes pressed against the drum. Replace
• Brake pedal is soft or goes to the floor, and fluid level drops without visible external leaks → Fluid is leaking past wheel cylinder seals and being absorbed by the brake shoe friction material. Replace cylinder and shoes
• Uneven brake shoe wear — one shoe is significantly more worn than its pair on the same wheel → One piston is sticking while the other moves normally. Replace the cylinder
• Rust or pitting visible inside the cylinder bore when rebuilding → The bore is damaged beyond what new seals can seal against. Replace the complete cylinder rather than rebuilding
