Forklift Injection Pump: Diesel Fuel Pumps for Mitsubishi Isuzu HELI Xinchai Engines

The diesel fuel injection pump is the most precise and expensive component in a forklift engine fuel system. It pressurizes diesel fuel to 1,000-2,000+ bar and delivers precisely timed, metered fuel shots to each injector in the correct firing order — injection timing must be accurate to within fractions of a crankshaft degree. A timing error of 2-3 degrees causes hard starting, white or black smoke, and power loss. The pump is gear-driven from the engine timing gears and synchronized to crankshaft and camshaft rotation, meaning pump replacement requires precise timing mark alignment. Two main pump types are used in forklift engines: the multi-plunger inline pump (one plunger per cylinder, used on larger engines like the Dachai 498 and Xinchai 490) and the rotary VE-type single-plunger distributor pump (used on the Isuzu 4JG2 and smaller engines).

When to Replace Injection Pumps:
• Hard starting (cranks but won’t fire, or requires excessive cranking) with white smoke from the exhaust → Pump timing is off or pump internal pressure is low. Verify timing first
• Black smoke under load with loss of power → Pump is delivering excess fuel or the injectors are worn. Verify injectors before condemning the pump
• Engine misfires on one cylinder that doesn’t change with injector swap → The pump plunger or delivery valve for that cylinder is worn. Pump requires rebuild or replacement
• Diesel fuel in the engine oil (oil level rising, diesel smell on dipstick) → Pump shaft seal has failed, allowing fuel into the crankcase. Replace pump immediately — diesel-diluted oil destroys bearings
• Pump seized or drive shaft broken → Complete pump failure. Verify the engine timing gears are intact before installing the new pump
