Forklift Brake Return Springs: Shoe Springs, Hold-Down Springs & Adjuster Springs

Forklift brake return springs are the tension springs inside the drum brake assembly that pull the brake shoes back to their resting position when the brake pedal is released. When a return spring weakens or snaps, the brake shoes remain in contact with the drum — causing dragging, overheating, premature lining wear, and reduced fuel efficiency from constant friction.

Kingstream stocks replacement brake return springs for Toyota, Komatsu, HELI, Mitsubishi, CAT, and Nissan forklifts. Every spring is manufactured to OEM wire diameter, coil count, and tension specifications.

Types of Brake Return Springs:

Shoe Return Springs — The main springs that connect between the two brake shoes and pull them together when hydraulic pressure is released. These are the highest-stress springs in the drum brake and the most common failure point. Broken or stretched return springs cause one-sided braking and uneven shoe wear.

Hold-Down Springs — Small coil springs that press the brake shoe against the backing plate. They prevent the shoe from lifting off the backing plate during operation. A failed hold-down spring allows the shoe to rattle and contact the drum unevenly, producing a scraping noise during braking.

Adjuster Springs — Spring that maintains tension on the self-adjusting mechanism. If this spring fails, the automatic brake adjuster stops working, and the brake pedal travel increases as the shoes wear down — requiring manual adjustment to maintain braking performance.

When to Replace Brake Springs

Replace brake return springs whenever you replace the brake shoes. Old springs lose tension from repeated heat cycling even if they look intact. Reusing old springs with new shoes is a false economy — the weak springs will cause the new shoes to drag and wear prematurely. Common symptoms of failing springs:

• Uneven brake shoe wear (one shoe worn more than the other)
• Brake pedal feels spongy or has excessive travel
• Burning smell from the wheel area after braking
• Forklift pulling to one side during braking
• Drum is difficult to remove due to shoes dragging
