The valve rocker arm translates the upward pushrod motion from the camshaft lobe into downward force on the valve stem tip, opening the intake or exhaust valve against spring pressure. Each rocker operates under continuous impact loading — at 2000 RPM, the rocker arm cycles 1000 times per minute per valve, accumulating tens of millions of impact cycles over the engine’s service life. A worn rocker pad develops a concave depression from these impacts, changing the valve lash and reducing valve lift, which causes power loss, ticking noise, and eventually a burned valve. The rocker shaft distributes oil from the engine oil gallery through internal drillings to each rocker arm bushing — blocked oil passages are the primary cause of rocker arm failure.

When to Replace Valve Rockers:
• Ticking or clattering noise from the valve cover area at half engine speed → Worn rocker pad or excessive bushing clearance. Adjust valve lash first — if noise persists after adjustment, replace rockers
• Valve clearance keeps opening up after adjustment (lash won’t hold) → Worn adjusting screw threads or locknut. Replace rocker arm
• Concave depression visible on the rocker pad under magnification → Pad is worn. Valve lift is reduced. Replace
• Scored or galled rocker shaft surface → Oil starvation has occurred. Replace shaft and all rockers — a scored shaft destroys new rocker bushings
• Blue exhaust smoke on startup → Worn valve seals allowing oil past guides. Replace seals before rocker and valve damage occurs
