The cylinder head kit is the complete upper engine assembly that bolts to the engine block — it includes the cast cylinder head, intake and exhaust valves, valve springs and retainers, valve guides, valve stem seals, and often the rocker arm assembly and cylinder head gasket. The cylinder head seals the top of the combustion chamber, houses the valves that control intake and exhaust flow, and contains the fuel injector bores (on direct-injection diesel engines) or spark plug threads (on LPG/gasoline engines). A cracked cylinder head between valve seats or from a valve seat to the water jacket causes coolant loss into the combustion chamber (white smoke from exhaust, coolant in oil). A warped head from overheating causes head gasket failure between cylinders, resulting in compression loss across adjacent cylinders. When to Replace Cylinder Head Kits:
• White smoke from the exhaust with coolant loss (no external leak visible) → Cracked cylinder head or blown head gasket. The crack is between a water jacket and combustion chamber. Replace head
• Coolant in the engine oil (milky appearance) with compression loss on one or more cylinders → Head gasket has failed or the head is warped from overheating. Replace head kit
• Compression loss between adjacent cylinders (both cylinders read low, wet test doesn’t improve) → Head gasket has blown between cylinders. Replace head gasket and inspect head for flatness
