Forklift Relief Valve: Hydraulic Pressure Control Valves for System Overpressure Protection

The forklift relief valve — also called a pressure relief valve, pressure control valve, or overpressure valve — is a hydraulic safety component that limits maximum system pressure by diverting excess oil flow back to the tank when pressure exceeds the calibrated set point. When a forklift hydraulic pump builds pressure beyond safe limits during cold starts, cylinder stall, or blocked flow conditions, the relief valve opens to bypass oil to the reservoir, protecting hoses, seals, cylinders, and the pump itself from catastrophic overpressure failure. Relief valves come in multiple configurations: direct-operated inline cartridge types, adjustable pilot-operated stackable modular designs (SystemStak DGMC2 series for NG6/CETOP 3 manifolds), and engine-specific cylinder block oil pressure relief valves for Mitsubishi S4Q2/S4S/S4L/S6S and Linde diesel engines. When to Replace Your Relief Valve — Common Symptoms
• Hydraulic system cannot reach working pressure — pump runs but cylinders move slowly or stall — Relief valve spring fatigue causing premature opening below set pressure
• Hydraulic oil overheating during normal operation — Relief valve stuck partially open, continuously bypassing oil and generating heat through throttling
• Intermittent pressure spikes causing jerky cylinder movement — Poppet seat contamination causing valve to stick closed then suddenly open
• External oil leak from the valve body — Failed O-ring or housing gasket at manifold interface or thread seal
• Engine oil pressure warning light stays on — Cylinder block relief valve stuck open, bypassing oil before it reaches bearings
