The forklift speed limit valve — also called a speed governor, lowering control valve, or flow restrictor — is a hydraulic safety component that caps the maximum descent speed of the forklift mast and attachment cylinders. When the operator lowers a loaded fork, gravity would accelerate the descent beyond safe limits if unrestricted. This valve meters return oil flow from the lift or tilt cylinder back to the tank using a spring-loaded pressure compensator: the heavier the load and higher the back pressure, the tighter the metering orifice becomes. This ensures consistent, controlled lowering speed from empty forks to full rated capacity — protecting loads, racking, and operators.
