Forklift Water Temperature Sensor: NTC Thermistor Coolant Senders for Cummins Isuzu Xinchai Engines

The water temperature sensor — also called coolant temperature sender or ECT sensor — is the thermistor-based device threaded into the engine block that measures coolant temperature and sends the signal to the temperature gauge and/or ECU. Most forklift water temperature sensors use NTC thermistors: resistance decreases as temperature increases. A sensor that drifts out of calibration reads the wrong temperature, causing the gauge to show “normal” while the engine is overheating. A failed sensor can also trigger false overheat shutdowns.

When to Replace:
• Gauge reads cold after 10+ minutes of running → Sensor failed open-circuit
• Gauge pegs hot immediately from cold start → Sensor shorted to ground
• Gauge fluctuates erratically at steady temperature → Intermittent internal connection
• Overheat light on but engine not actually overheating → Calibration drift
• Resistance at known temperature doesn’t match R-T curve → Sensor out of calibration
