Forklift Timer: Glow Plug Preheat Timers & Time Delay Relays for Diesel Engines
The glow plug timer controls the preheat cycle that warms the glow plugs before a cold diesel engine can start. When the key is turned to the “ON” position, the timer energizes the glow plugs for a calibrated duration (typically 5-15 seconds depending on engine temperature), then the dashboard preheat indicator light goes out, signaling the operator to crank the engine. A failed timer means the glow plugs never energize — the engine cranks but won’t start on a cold morning. Or worse, the timer sticks on and burns out all four glow plugs simultaneously.

How a Glow Plug Timer Works:
The timer receives a signal from the ignition switch and energizes the glow plug relay for a pre-set duration. Some timers are fixed-duration (always the same preheat time regardless of temperature). More advanced timers use a thermistor input to vary preheat duration — longer when the engine is cold, shorter when warm. After the preheat cycle completes, the timer energizes the dashboard indicator light (signaling “ready to start”) and may continue a brief “after-glow” cycle to reduce white smoke during initial running.
When to Replace Your Glow Plug Timer:
• Preheat indicator light never comes on, engine hard to start cold → Timer has failed open; glow plugs are not energizing. Verify with a test light at the glow plug bus bar during key-on.
• Preheat indicator light stays on continuously, doesn’t time out → Timer has failed closed; glow plugs are energized continuously — this will burn them out within minutes. Disconnect the timer immediately.
• Preheat cycle too short — engine still hard to start cold → Timer duration has drifted out of specification; replace
• Battery drains overnight, glow plug circuit is warm with key off → Timer relay contacts welded closed — the glow plugs are drawing current 24/7. Replace timer and check glow plugs for damage.
• Timer relay clicks but glow plugs don’t get power → Relay contacts burnt or corroded. Timer control side works but power side is open; replace.
