Forklift Water Pump: Cast Iron Coolant Pumps for Xinchai 490, C240, 4100 & 6110 Diesel Engines

The water pump circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, and radiator at a rate of 50-80 liters per minute — without it, the engine overheats in under five minutes of operation. When the pump’s internal seal fails, coolant leaks through the weep hole onto the timing cover, mixing with oil and creating the milky sludge that indicates a failed water pump bearing. When the bearing seizes, the pump stops rotating, the belt slips and burns, and the engine temperature gauge climbs past the red zone before the operator can react. A $60 water pump replacement prevents a $3,000 cylinder head gasket job.

Types of Water Pumps:

Xinchai 490 Water Pump — The most common forklift water pump, fitting 485, 490, and 4D27G31 diesel engines in HELI 2-3.5 ton forklifts. OEM part numbers 490B-42100 and 490B-42000. Cast iron construction for durability.

C240 Engine Water Pump — Nissan C240 diesel engine water pump (OEM C240-8-94376-86) used in TCM and Nissan forklifts. Different bolt pattern and impeller design from the Xinchai series.

Yunnei 4100 / Xichai 6110 Water Pump — Higher-capacity pumps for larger-displacement engines. The 6110 pump serves 6-cylinder diesel engines in heavy-tonnage forklifts and industrial equipment.

Water Pump Pulley — The drive pulley that transfers belt power to the pump shaft. Part number SHA41121 for Yunnei engines. Replace the pulley when replacing the pump if the old pulley shows groove wear.

When to Replace Your Water Pump:

• Coolant leaking from the weep hole under the pump → Internal seal has failed. The weep hole is designed to leak before coolant reaches the bearing — replace immediately before bearing failure
• Grinding, growling, or rumbling noise from the pump area → Bearing is failing. The noise changes with engine RPM. Replace before the bearing seizes and snaps the belt
• Engine overheats despite full coolant and functioning radiator → Pump impeller may be corroded, eroded, or spinning on the shaft. Check coolant flow at the radiator cap with engine running
• Pump pulley wobbles or shows visible runout → Bearing has excessive play. The belt will wear unevenly and may come off. Replace pump and belt together
• Milky oil on dipstick or under oil cap → Water pump seal failure has allowed coolant into the oil. This is a critical warning — stop operation and replace the pump immediately
