The engine cooling system is what prevents your forklift engine from destroying itself through overheating. Combustion temperatures inside a diesel or LPG engine reach 2,000°C — without the cooling system, pistons would seize in their bores within minutes and the cylinder head would crack from thermal stress. The radiator, water pump, thermostat, and fan blade work continuously to maintain the engine at its optimal operating temperature (80-90°C). When any one component fails — a leaking radiator, a seized water pump, a stuck-closed thermostat — the engine overheats, the head gasket blows, and repair costs multiply tenfold.

Forklift Radiator — The heat exchanger that transfers engine heat from the coolant to the atmosphere. Radiators are typically aluminum-core with plastic tanks (modern forklifts) or copper-brass (older models). Cooling system failure most commonly originates at the radiator: internal clogging from neglected coolant changes restricts flow, external fin blockage from dust and debris reduces heat transfer, and vibration cracks at the tank-to-core joint cause slow coolant loss. A 10°C increase above normal operating temperature halves engine oil life and accelerates bearing wear. We stock complete radiators with correct core dimensions, inlet/outlet locations, and mounting brackets for Toyota 4Y/1DZ, Komatsu 4D94/4D95, Isuzu C240, and HELI Xinchai 490/495 engines.
Forklift Water Pump — The centrifugal pump that circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder head, and radiator. The water pump is belt-driven from the crankshaft pulley and typically operates at 1-1.5 times engine RPM. A failing water pump produces: a grinding or squealing noise from worn bearings, coolant leaking from the weep hole (indicating shaft seal failure), or engine overheating at idle (worn impeller not moving enough coolant at low RPM). Never run an engine with a leaking water pump — coolant loss leads to overheating, and the leaking coolant can contaminate the timing belt/chain. We stock water pumps with correct impeller type (cast iron or stamped steel), pulley flange, and gasket for Toyota, Komatsu, HELI, and Nissan forklift engines.
Forklift Thermostat — The wax-pellet temperature valve located between the engine and radiator. The thermostat remains closed when the engine is cold, forcing coolant to circulate only within the engine block for fast warm-up. When coolant reaches the thermostat’s rated opening temperature (typically 71°C, 82°C, or 88°C depending on the engine specification), the wax pellet expands and opens the valve, allowing coolant to flow to the radiator. A thermostat that fails closed causes rapid engine overheating — the radiator stays cold while the engine temperature gauge climbs. A thermostat that fails open causes slow warm-up, poor fuel economy, and increased engine wear. Test a suspect thermostat by suspending it in a pot of water with a thermometer and heating — verify the opening temperature and full-open travel. Forklift Fan Blade — The engine-driven or electric cooling fan that pulls air through the radiator core. Engine-driven fans may include a viscous clutch that reduces fan speed when cooling demand is low, improving fuel economy. A cracked or chipped fan blade is a safety hazard — centrifugal force at engine RPM can cause the blade to separate and penetrate the radiator or hood. Replace any fan with visible cracks. We stock fan blades with correct diameter, blade count, and bolt pattern for Toyota, Komatsu, HELI, and Nissan engines.
Forklift Radiator Cap — The pressure cap that seals the radiator filler neck and pressurizes the cooling system. Pressurizing the system raises the coolant boiling point — at 15 PSI (1 bar), the boiling point increases from 100°C to approximately 121°C, providing a critical margin against boiling during high-load operation. A radiator cap that fails to hold pressure allows the coolant to boil at a lower temperature, causing localized hot spots and coolant loss through the overflow. Test radiator cap pressure with a cooling system pressure tester — replace if it cannot hold rated pressure. We stock radiator caps with correct pressure rating and neck diameter.
Forklift Radiator Cover — The protective shroud or grille that protects the radiator core from debris impact and directs airflow. A damaged or missing radiator cover exposes the core fins to damage from debris and reduces cooling efficiency by allowing air to bypass the radiator. We stock radiator covers and fan shrouds with correct mounting points.
Forklift Water Pipe — The rigid metal coolant pipes and flexible rubber hoses that connect the engine, radiator, heater core (if equipped), and expansion tank. Coolant hoses deteriorate from the inside out — the inner liner hardens and cracks from heat cycling before the outer cover shows any visible damage. Replace coolant hoses every 2,000 hours or when they feel hard or spongy to the touch. A burst coolant hose drains the cooling system in seconds — stop the engine immediately. We stock formed hoses and pipes with correct inner diameter, bend radius, and end fitting type.
Forklift Fuel Injection Pump — The diesel fuel injection pump that pressurizes and meters fuel to each injector. Although technically a fuel system component, the injection pump is often serviced alongside cooling system work when the engine is apart for a head gasket replacement or major overhaul. Fuel contamination (water or dirt) is the #1 cause of injection pump failure. We stock inline and rotary injection pumps calibrated to OEM timing specifications.
Cooling System Maintenance:
• Check coolant level at every 250-hour PM — Check the expansion tank when the engine is cold. Low coolant indicates a leak — investigate, don’t just top up.
• Test coolant concentration every 500 hours — Use a refractometer (not a float-type tester). Maintain 50/50 coolant-to-water ratio for -37°C freeze protection and correct corrosion inhibitor concentration.
• Inspect belts and hoses every 500 hours — Check water pump belt tension and condition. Squeeze radiator hoses — they should feel firm but flexible, not hard or spongy.
• Pressure-test the cooling system annually — Pressurize the cold system to the radiator cap rating and verify it holds pressure for 2 minutes. If pressure drops, look for external leaks or internal leakage (coolant in oil = milky oil; coolant in cylinders = white exhaust smoke).
• Change coolant every 2 years or 2,000 hours — Cooling system corrosion is silent and progressive. Depleted inhibitors cause electrolysis that eats cylinder liners and radiator cores from the inside.
