Forklift Electric Battery: Lead-Acid & LiFePO4 Traction Batteries for 24V-80V Electric Forklifts

The traction battery is the single most expensive component on an electric forklift — typically 20-30% of the machine’s total cost — and its condition determines shift runtime, lift performance, and total cost of ownership. A degraded battery that only holds 60% of its rated capacity means the forklift dies halfway through the shift, requiring a mid-shift battery swap or early charging that shortens the battery’s remaining life even further. Lead-acid batteries require weekly watering and equalization charging; lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries eliminate watering, charge faster, and last 2-3x longer but at a higher upfront cost.

Kingstream supplies replacement traction batteries in lead-acid and LiFePO4 chemistries for HELI, Toyota, Komatsu, BYD, and Hyster electric forklifts. Voltage options from 24V to 80V, capacities from 100Ah to 1000Ah.

Types of Forklift Batteries:

Lead-Acid Traction Battery — Traditional deep-cycle battery designed for 8-hour shift operation with an 8-hour charge and 8-hour cooldown cycle. The 10VBS550 (48V 550Ah) is a standard DIN/BS-size industrial battery for 2-3 ton electric forklifts. The 36V 1000Ah battery serves larger-capacity electric forklifts and warehouse equipment. Requires regular watering and monthly equalization charging.

LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Battery — 3.2V 100Ah cells configurable into 12.8V or higher-voltage packs. Opportunity charging (charge during lunch breaks) without memory effect. No watering, no acid spills, no equalization required. Lighter than equivalent lead-acid, enabling longer runtimes or additional payload capacity. 2-3x longer cycle life than lead-acid.

When to Replace Your Forklift Battery:

Runtime has dropped below 60% of rated shift duration → The battery can no longer complete a full shift. Individual cell testing may identify failed cells for replacement, or a full battery replacement is needed
Battery takes significantly longer to charge than when new → Internal resistance has increased. The battery is accepting less current and wasting more as heat
Visible corrosion on terminals, cracked case, or leaking acid → Structural damage. Replace the battery — acid leaks damage the forklift chassis and create a workplace hazard
Cells require watering more frequently than weekly → The plates are sulfated or the battery is being overcharged. The battery is at end of life
Battery voltage drops severely under load (voltage sag during lift operations) → Internal resistance is too high. The battery can’t deliver peak current. Replace

OEM Cross-Reference / Available Models:

Part No. / SKU Chemistry Voltage Capacity Application
10VBS550 Lead-Acid 48V 550Ah 2-3T electric forklifts (DIN/BS)
BATT-36V-1000AH Lead-Acid 36V 1000Ah Large electric forklifts, warehouse
LIFEPO4-12.8V-100AH LiFePO4 3.2V cell / 12.8V pack 100Ah Energy storage, electric bus, forklift

⚠️ Always match battery voltage to the forklift’s rated system voltage. Using a 24V battery in a 48V forklift will not work; using a higher voltage battery than the system rating will damage the controller.
