Forklift Differential: Drive Axle Assembly H24C3, Cross Shafts & Differential Units for HELI Toyota Doosan

The differential is the gear assembly inside the drive axle that allows the left and right drive wheels to rotate at different speeds when the forklift turns — without it, the inner wheel would scrub and skip during every turn, destroying tires, stressing the axle, and making the forklift dangerous to steer. The differential splits engine torque between the two axle shafts while permitting speed differences. A failed differential causes grinding noise during turns (worn spider gears), clunking when changing direction (excessive backlash between ring and pinion), or complete loss of drive to one or both wheels (broken cross shaft or side gear). Differential failure typically results from low or contaminated gear oil — the ring and pinion gears run in an oil bath, and running the axle dry destroys the hardened gear surfaces in minutes.

When to Replace Differential Components:
• Grinding or howling noise during turns, quiet when driving straight → Spider gears or side gears are worn. The noise occurs because these gears only rotate during turns when wheel speeds differ
• Loud clunk or bang when shifting from forward to reverse → Excessive backlash between ring and pinion gears. The gear teeth have worn clearance beyond specification
• Metal flakes or glitter in the differential oil → Gear teeth are spalling. The hardened surface layer has failed. Drain the oil, inspect gears, replace worn components
• One drive wheel has no power — the other spins freely → Broken cross shaft, stripped spider gear, or sheared axle shaft inside the differential
• Oil leaking from the axle housing at the differential → Pinion seal or axle shaft seal has failed. Low oil level will destroy the differential if not corrected
