Forklift Steering Wheel Hub: The Splined Center Connector Between Wheel and Steering Column
The steering wheel hub is the central metal component that mounts onto the steering column shaft splines and provides the bolt circle to which the steering wheel rim is attached. It transfers all steering torque from the operator’s hands through the steering column to the orbitrol unit or steering gearbox. A worn, cracked, or incorrectly splined hub creates a permanent loose-steering condition that cannot be corrected by tightening the center nut — the spline interference fit has degraded, and the only solution is hub replacement. On forklifts subjected to continuous stop-and-start steering, frequent directional reversals, and operator entry/exit where the steering wheel is used as a grab handle, the hub splines experience high cyclic loading that accelerates wear.
Kingstream supplies steering wheel hubs for 15+ forklift brands including Toyota, Komatsu, HELI, CAT, Mitsubishi, Hangcha, Yale, and Linde. Each hub is machined from forged alloy steel with precision-cut splines to OEM pitch and taper specifications, ensuring zero rotational play after torquing to specification.
When to Replace / Common Symptoms:
• Steering wheel rocks or wobbles on the column despite a tight center nut → Worn hub splines or cracked hub body
• Clicking or creaking noise when turning the steering wheel at low speed → Loose spline engagement between hub and column shaft
• Steering wheel sits off-center after straight-ahead driving → Damaged master spline allowing incorrect clock position
• Visible crack radiating from the center bore outward → Hub fatigue failure — replace immediately
• Rust staining or corrosion at the spline interface → Seized hub that will require a puller for removal
