Forklift Mast Chain: Leaf Chain Assemblies for Mast Lifting & Carriage Elevation Systems

A forklift mast chain is a high-strength leaf chain that transmits the lifting force from the hydraulic lift cylinder to the fork carriage, raising and lowering loads through the mast assembly. Mast chains are precision roller chains constructed from hardened alloy steel link plates, pins, and bushings — designed for the high-tension, low-speed reciprocating motion unique to forklift mast lifting systems. Unlike transmission chains that operate at high RPM with continuous rotation, mast chains endure static load holding at elevation, shock loading during load engagement, and cyclic fatigue from thousands of lift-lower cycles per shift. A stretched, worn, or damaged mast chain is a critical safety hazard — chain failure during an elevated load can cause catastrophic carriage drop. Chain stretch beyond 2-3% of the original pitch length, visible pin wear, cracked link plates, or seized joints are all indicators requiring immediate chain replacement. Mast chains should always be replaced in matched pairs to ensure equal load distribution between both sides of the mast.

When to Replace / Common Symptoms:
• Chain stretch exceeds 3% of original pitch length → Replace immediately — do not adjust tension to compensate
• Visible cracked or deformed link plates → Fatigue failure imminent — replace chain pair
• Stiff or seized chain joints causing jerky lift motion → Dry or corroded pins — replace chain
• Uneven chain tension between left and right mast chains → One chain stretched more than the other — replace as matched pair
• Chain joint or master link shows elongation or wear → Replace chain joint with chain replacement
