Forklift Transmission Shaft: Propeller Shafts & Drive Shaft Assemblies for HELI CPCD50-70 Liugong
The transmission shaft — also called propeller shaft or drive shaft — connects the transmission output to the drive axle input, transmitting engine torque through universal joints that accommodate the angular movement between the transmission and axle during suspension travel and frame flex. On heavy-duty 5-10 ton forklifts and loaders, the transmission shaft handles enormous torque loads from the diesel engine multiplied through the transmission’s lowest gear — a shaft that twists under load or runs out of balance destroys U-joints, transmission output bearings, and pinion bearings in a cascade of drivetrain damage. The shaft must be precision-balanced with proper U-joint phasing — installing it 180 degrees out of phase creates severe vibration even with a perfectly good shaft.

When to Replace Transmission Shafts:
• Driveline vibration that increases with vehicle speed, felt through the seat and floor → Shaft is bent, unbalanced, or a balance weight has come off. Inspect for visible damage, missing weights, or dents
• Clunking when shifting from forward to reverse or between gears → Excessive U-joint play or slip yoke spline wear. The driveline has rotational slack
• Squeaking or chirping from under the forklift that changes with speed → Dry U-joints. The needle bearings are running without grease. Replace U-joints before they seize
• Visible runout or wobble when the shaft is rotated by hand (forklift raised and blocked) → Shaft is bent. Replace — straightening is not reliable for balanced driveline components
• Grease thrown radially around the U-joint area or slip yoke → Seal failure. The joint will run dry and fail. Replace
