The forklift steering knuckle is a cast steel or stainless steel pivot component mounted on the rear axle assembly that connects the steering cylinder linkage to the wheel hub. When the operator turns the steering wheel, the orbitrol unit directs hydraulic oil to the steering cylinder, which pushes or pulls the knuckle — rotating the rear wheel around the kingpin axis proportional to the steering input. The knuckle must withstand continuous bending and torsional loads from steering forces, road impacts, and forklift pivoting maneuvers. • Steering wander — forklift does not track straight, requiring constant steering correction — Elongated kingpin bore allowing wheel hub to shift laterally under load
• Uneven rear tire wear — one rear tire wears faster or shows feathered tread pattern — Worn knuckle causing incorrect camber angle during turns
• Knocking or clunking when transitioning from left to right steering — Mechanical play at the kingpin-to-knuckle interface from bore ovality
• Increased steering effort — operator must turn the wheel harder to achieve the same wheel angle — Seized or partially seized kingpin from lack of lubrication or corrosion
