Forklift Transmission Strainer — Oil Intake Filter Screen for Hydraulic & Manual Gearboxes

This transmission strainer is a metal mesh intake filter installed inside the transmission oil pan or pickup tube, designed to capture large debris particles (typically >100 microns) before they enter the oil pump and circulate through the gearbox. Unlike the external spin-on transmission filters that trap fine particles in the 10-30 micron range, this strainer serves as the first line of defense — catching metal chips, broken gear teeth fragments, and clutch material chunks that would instantly damage the oil pump gears if ingested. The strainer body is stamped from mild steel with a zinc-plated finish for corrosion resistance, and the filter screen is welded (not glued) to the frame — glued screens commonly separate from the frame in hot transmission oil (80-100°C operating temperature), leaving an unfiltered bypass path directly into the pump suction side. The pickup tube connection uses an O-ring seal rather than a gasket; always replace the O-ring during strainer replacement, as a hardened original O-ring will allow the pump to draw air instead of oil, causing cavitation noise and delayed gear engagement on cold starts.

The strainer should be replaced rather than cleaned in most cases — the mesh is fine enough that metal particles embed into the wire intersections and cannot be fully removed by solvent washing. Attempting to clean and reuse a strainer that has trapped hardened steel particles risks those particles breaking loose during the next oil change and circulating through the rebuilt transmission. During installation, verify the strainer sits flat against the oil pan floor — if the old strainer was deformed from impact with road debris or improper jack placement, the new strainer will sit at an angle and may draw air when the oil level drops during cornering or ramp operation. The pickup tube must be fully inserted into the strainer outlet port until the O-ring seats with a distinct “pop” feel; a partially-seated O-ring will leak air under pump suction vacuum. Common failure indicators: a whining noise from the transmission that increases with RPM (oil pump cavitation from clogged strainer), delayed forward engagement after sitting overnight (oil draining back through a damaged anti-drainback valve in the strainer), and visible metal particles in the oil pan during a fluid change that exceed the normal “fuzz on the magnet” level (strainer mesh torn or dislodged).

This strainer fits Heli, Hangcha, TCM, and Toyota forklift transmissions in the 1.5-5 ton class. Compare the bolt pattern and pickup tube diameter of your existing strainer before ordering — some manufacturers use a 3-bolt triangular pattern while others use a 4-bolt square pattern that is visually similar but dimensionally incompatible.
