Installing the 8-hole brake drum on a 4.5 ton forklift requires removing the wheel and tire, backing off the brake shoe adjuster to retract the shoes from the drum inner surface, removing the old drum from the wheel hub, cleaning the hub mating surface of rust and debris, installing the new drum onto the hub, and securing with the 8 lug nuts torqued in a star pattern to specification. The drum must seat fully against the hub flange — an unevenly seated drum wobbles and causes brake pulsation. After installation, adjust the brake shoes using the adjuster mechanism until the drum rotates with slight drag (the shoes just begin to contact the drum), then back off slightly for free rotation. Bleeding is typically not required if only the drum was replaced without disconnecting hydraulic lines. For 4.5 ton forklifts in heavy-duty environments, the brake drum should be inspected during every brake service for scoring, cracking, heat checking (a pattern of fine surface cracks from repeated thermal cycling), and wear beyond the maximum diameter specification. A scored or out-of-round drum causes brake pulsation and uneven shoe wear.
