INSTALLATION PROCEDURE: Step 1 — Remove the engine from the forklift and mount on an engine stand. Step 2 — Drain engine oil and remove the oil pan. Step 3 — Remove the cylinder head, pistons, and connecting rods. Step 4 — Remove the crankshaft pulley, timing cover, and timing components. Step 5 — Loosen the main bearing cap bolts in reverse torque sequence. Step 6 — Remove each main bearing cap and carefully extract the old upper and lower bearing shells. Keep shells organized by position — each main journal bearing must go back in the exact same position. Step 7 — Thoroughly clean the crankshaft journals with lint-free cloth and inspect for scoring, ovality, or taper using a micrometer. Polish or regrind the crankshaft if necessary. Step 8 — Clean the bearing saddles in the block and caps. Step 9 — Install the new upper bearing shells into the block saddles and lower shells into the caps. Apply engine assembly lube to the bearing surfaces. NEVER apply oil to the back of the bearing shells. Step 10 — Carefully lower the crankshaft into position. Step 11 — Install main bearing caps in correct position and orientation, torque bolts to specification in correct sequence. Step 12 — Verify crankshaft rotates freely by hand with no binding. SYMPTOMS OF MAIN BEARING FAILURE: Deep knocking noise from the lower engine that increases with engine speed and load, low oil pressure especially at idle, metal particles or copper-colored flakes in the engine oil or oil filter, excessive crankshaft end play, and in severe cases, crankshaft seizure from spun bearing.
