Forklift Engine Bearings: Main, Connecting Rod & Thrust Bearing Sets for Diesel Forklifts
Forklift engine bearings are the precision half-shell inserts that support the crankshaft and connecting rods — they are the thin layer of bearing material that separates rotating steel journals from stationary housing bores on a film of pressurized oil. When bearings wear, oil pressure drops, metal-to-metal contact begins, and within minutes the crankshaft journal is scored beyond repair. Kingstream stocks forklift engine bearing sets including main bearings, connecting rod bearings, and thrust bearings for Xinchai 490/4D27, Dachai 498, and 6102 diesel engine platforms used in HELI and Hangcha forklifts.
Engine bearings are manufactured as bi-metal or tri-metal shells — a steel backing for structural strength, a copper-lead or aluminum intermediate layer for embeddability and fatigue resistance, and a thin babbit overlay for conformability during initial break-in. The bearing shell relies on a precise interference fit in the housing bore — called bearing crush — to prevent the shell from spinning with the crankshaft. The XC490-4D27 connecting rod bearing set is the most commonly replaced bearing on Xinchai-powered forklifts because the rod bearings operate under higher specific loading than main bearings and are the first to show wear when oil change intervals are extended. The forklift thrust bearing controls crankshaft end play — excessive end play from a worn thrust bearing face causes the crankshaft to hammer axially, accelerating main bearing and connecting rod wear throughout the engine.
When replacing forklift engine bearings, always check the crankshaft journal for roundness, taper, and surface finish before installing new bearings — installing standard-size bearings on a worn or scored journal guarantees failure. If the journal is undersize, use the correct undersize bearing set (typically 0.25mm, 0.50mm, or 0.75mm undersize). Measure bearing oil clearance with Plastigage at assembly — insufficient clearance starves the bearing of oil, while excessive clearance causes low oil pressure and bearing hammer. Prime the oil system before first start by cranking with the fuel shut off until oil pressure registers on the gauge. The Dachai 498 crankshaft thrust bearing controls a narrow clearance band — excessive end play from a worn thrust face quickly destroys the adjacent main bearing.
Signs Your Engine Bearings Are Worn
Worn forklift engine bearings produce a deep knocking sound from the lower engine that increases with RPM — main bearing knock is a heavy thud that is loudest under load, while rod bearing knock is sharper and most noticeable when the engine is floating between acceleration and deceleration. Low oil pressure at hot idle, especially when the pressure warning light flickers, indicates excessive bearing clearance that allows oil to escape faster than the pump can deliver. Metal particles in the oil filter element or magnetic drain plug signal bearing material loss — any visible metal means the bearings have worn through the overlay and into the intermediate layer. A forklift crankshaft bearing failure that is ignored will eventually spin the bearing shell, blocking the oil feed hole and causing catastrophic crankshaft damage within seconds.

Quality Control at Kingstream
Every forklift engine bearing set we ship is inspected for wall thickness consistency across the shell arc — thickness variation causes uneven oil clearance and localized loading. The bearing back is checked for foreign material and surface defects that would prevent proper heat transfer to the housing. The overlay surface is inspected for porosity, scoring, or embedding of debris. You receive forklift bearings with consistent wall thickness and clean bearing surfaces — not a set with a 0.01mm thickness variation that creates a tight spot on the journal.
