Forklift Differential — The gear assembly that allows the left and right drive wheels to rotate at different speeds during cornering. Inside the differential housing, the ring gear, pinion gear, and spider gears divide and redirect power from the driveshaft to the axle shafts. A failing differential produces a distinctive whining or howling noise that changes pitch with road speed — the noise gets louder under load and quieter during coasting. Common failure causes: low gear oil (check for leaks at the pinion seal and axle seals), contaminated oil from water ingress, or worn bearings that create excessive gear backlash. Forklift Drive Axle Housing — The cast iron or fabricated steel housing that encloses the differential and axle shafts. The housing must withstand the full weight of the forklift plus load while absorbing impact from potholes, dock plates, and debris. A cracked housing leaks gear oil and allows contaminants into the differential — catastrophic bearing failure follows within hours. Common crack locations: around the spring perches (from overloading), at the mounting flange welds, and around drain plug threads from overtightening.

Forklift Drive Shaft — The forged steel shaft that transmits torque from the differential side gear to the wheel hub. Drive shafts are splined on both ends — one end engages the differential side gear, the other end drives the hub. A twisted or snapped drive shaft is the result of severe shock loading — typically from dropping a heavy load while the wheels are spinning, or from a wheel impact against a solid obstacle. Forklift Transmission Shaft — The shaft connecting the transmission output to the differential input flange. Also called the propeller shaft or driveshaft on some models. Worn universal joints on the transmission shaft cause vibration that increases with speed and is felt through the chassis and steering. Forklift Drive Hub — The wheel mounting hub that bolts to the axle shaft and carries the wheel and brake drum. The hub contains tapered roller bearings that support both radial load (forklift weight) and thrust load (cornering forces). A worn hub bearing produces a low-pitched growl or rumble that changes when the forklift turns — the noise increases when weight transfers to the worn side during cornering. Forklift Main Reducer — Also called the final drive or bull gear reduction. The main reducer is a gear set (typically a planetary or spur gear reduction) that provides the final torque multiplication between the differential output and the wheel. A failing reducer produces a rhythmic knocking sound that matches wheel rotation speed — this indicates a chipped or broken gear tooth. Forklift Reduction Gear — Individual spur gears, helical gears, and planetary gears used within the main reducer and wheel reducer assemblies. Forklift Wheel Reducer — Also called a hub reduction or planetary hub. Wheel reducers run in their own oil bath — low oil level from a leaking hub seal is the most common cause of failure.

Drive Axle Maintenance Tips:

• Check gear oil level every 250 hours — Low oil destroys differentials faster than any other failure mode. Check with the forklift on level ground and the oil at operating temperature.
• Change gear oil every 1,000 hours — Use GL-5 80W-90 or 85W-140 as specified by the axle manufacturer. Heavier oil (85W-140) is recommended for forklifts operating in hot climates or continuous heavy-load duty cycles.
• Inspect axle breathers — Clogged breathers cause pressure buildup inside the axle housing, forcing oil past seals. Clean or replace breathers at each oil change.
• Listen for noise changes — Differential noise that changes pitch under load vs. coast is the earliest warning of gear or bearing wear. Investigate immediately — running a noisy differential to failure can destroy the housing.
