The fan blade is the air-moving component of the engine cooling system — mounted on the water pump pulley or crankshaft, it pulls ambient air through the radiator core at speeds proportional to engine RPM, providing the airflow that dissipates engine heat. The 490 engine fan blade is a precision-balanced component designed to move the required air volume without creating excessive noise or vibration. Installing the fan blade requires removing the fan shroud for access, unbolting the old fan blade from the water pump pulley flange, and torquing the replacement blade bolts evenly to specification. The fan blade must be oriented correctly — installing it backwards reverses the airflow direction, pushing hot engine compartment air forward through the radiator instead of pulling cool ambient air through. After installation, rotate the engine by hand to verify the fan blade clears the fan shroud at all positions. Run the engine and check for vibration — any detectable vibration indicates either an unbalanced replacement fan blade or loose mounting bolts. For 490 engines in multi-shift forklift operations, the fan blade should be inspected for cracks at the blade root (the highest stress point where the blade meets the center hub) during every coolant service interval.
