Installing the SMH 175A battery connector requires stripping the battery cable insulation, crimping the connector contacts onto the cable conductors using a hydraulic crimping tool rated for the cable gauge, inserting the crimped contacts into the connector housing until they click into place, and mating the male and female connector halves. The SMH connector is polarized — the contacts are keyed so the connector can only be mated in the correct orientation, preventing reverse polarity connection that would damage the forklift electronics. The high-current contacts must be fully seated in the housing — a partially inserted contact creates a poor connection that generates localized heating at the contact interface during battery charging or high-current motor operation. This heating can melt the plastic connector housing, creating a fire hazard in the battery compartment where hydrogen gas from charging batteries can accumulate. Before connecting the battery to the charger or forklift, verify the connector contacts are clean and free of corrosion or pitting.
