The clutch disc is the central torque-transfer component in the manual transmission drivetrain — when the pressure plate clamps it against the flywheel face, engine power flows through the friction facings into the splined hub and onward to the transmission input shaft. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the clamping force releases and the disc freewheels for gear changes. Over time, the friction facings wear down, reducing the disc thickness and eventually causing clutch slippage under load, particularly noticeable on gradients and during loaded acceleration. A slipping clutch disc must be replaced promptly to prevent heat damage to the flywheel and pressure plate, which dramatically increases repair cost and downtime.
