4.5mm Transmission Brake Friction Plate — Standard-Thickness Clutch Pack Disc
This is a 4.5mm-thick transmission brake friction plate — the standard-thickness specification for the majority of 2-3.5 ton forklift powershift transmission clutch packs. The 4.5mm dimension is the single most critical specification on this plate, more important than tooth count or outer diameter, because it determines the stack height clearance within the clutch pack assembly. A transmission clutch pack consists of alternating friction plates (splined to the shaft hub) and steel separator plates (tanged to the housing), and the total stack height of all plates combined determines the piston travel clearance. When the friction plates wear 0.1-0.2mm below their original 4.5mm thickness, the combined clearance across a 6-plate pack increases by 0.6-1.2mm — enough that the hydraulic apply piston runs out of stroke before the pack is fully compressed, resulting in transmission slip under load even though no single plate looks “worn out” to the naked eye. This is why transmission rebuilders measure stack height with a feeler gauge, not just visually inspect individual plates.
The difference between a 4.5mm and a 4.0mm friction plate — which look identical when sitting on a workbench — is the most common mis-order on transmission rebuilds. A 4.0mm plate installed into a pack designed for 4.5mm plates creates excessive clearance that the piston cannot fully close; a 4.5mm plate in a 4.0mm pack creates a bind condition where the pack never fully releases, burning the transmission fluid and warping the steel separators within the first hour of operation. This 4.5mm plate uses a standard-density wet friction compound formulated for balanced wear life and friction coefficient in the 2-3.5 ton engine torque band. The friction material is bonded to a precision-stamped steel core plate with controlled oil groove patterns that channel ATF across the friction surface for cooling and debris flushing during operation — grooves that become shallower as the plate wears, reducing cooling efficiency and accelerating end-of-life wear.
Compatible with Heli CPCD20-CPCD35, Hangcha CPCD20-CPCD35, TCM FD20-FD35, Toyota 7FD20-7FD35, and other 2-3.5 ton forklifts using powershift transmissions with 4.5mm standard-thickness clutch pack friction plates. Always verify your existing plate thickness with a micrometer before ordering — 4.0mm and 4.5mm variants exist within the same transmission family and are not interchangeable. Measure the full stack height with the pack assembled and compare to the transmission service manual specification. Replace as a complete set. Browse our transmission parts category.
