Forklift Hydraulic Transmission Shaft — Heavy-Duty Drivetrain Component for 4.5 Ton Forklifts
This transmission shaft is engineered specifically for 4.5-ton hydraulic transmission forklifts, serving as the critical torque-transfer link between the torque converter output and the power shift gearbox input. Unlike the lighter transmission shafts used in 1.5-3 ton forklifts (which typically use a 25mm spline diameter and single universal joint), this 4.5-ton class shaft features a 32-35mm hardened spline with dual Cardan joints — necessary to handle the 180-220 N·m continuous torque output of larger displacement engines in the 4-5 ton class. The shaft is machined from medium-carbon alloy steel (40Cr equivalent) with induction-hardened spline teeth to HRC 48-52, providing the surface hardness needed to resist fretting wear at the coupling interfaces while maintaining core ductility to absorb shock loads during heavy cargo handling. This transmission shaft is NOT interchangeable with the lighter 1.5-3T class shafts — the overall length, spline count, and joint flange bolt pattern are all dimensionally different.
The most common installation error with a 4.5-ton class transmission shaft is misalignment of the universal joint phasing. The two Cardan joints at either end of the shaft must be welded in-phase — meaning the yoke ears on both ends must align within 1 degree of rotation. An out-of-phase shaft (even by 3-5 degrees) produces a non-uniform angular velocity between the input and output, causing a distinctive “thrumming” vibration that peaks at 1,800-2,200 RPM. Before installation, lay the shaft on a flat surface and verify both yoke ears are in the same plane. The spline sliding joint must be pre-greased with molybdenum disulfide grease (NLGI #2 with 3% MoS2), not standard lithium grease — the high sliding friction in the spline under torque load requires the extreme-pressure additive to prevent galling. Common failure symptoms: a rhythmic clunking noise during forward-reverse directional changes (worn spline coupling), grease leakage from the slip joint bellows boot (torn rubber seal allowing contamination), and increasing vibration amplitude over a 2-3 month period (gradual U-joint needle bearing wear).
This transmission shaft fits Heli CPCD45, Hangcha CPCD45, TCM FD45T, and similar 4.5-ton class hydraulic transmission forklifts. Always measure your existing shaft overall compressed length (flange face to flange face) and count the spline teeth before ordering — these two measurements are the definitive fitment verification.
