Forklift Rear Steering Axle — Complete Assembly for TCM 2-3 Ton Forklifts
This rear steering axle assembly is a complete, bolt-in replacement unit for TCM FD20, FD25, and FD30 series 2-3 ton forklifts. The rear axle on a counterbalance forklift serves dual functions: it carries approximately 45-55% of the total loaded vehicle weight on its two wheel ends, and it provides the steering function through a hydraulically-actuated double-acting steering cylinder mounted on the axle beam. Unlike the front drive axle (which transmits engine power), the rear steering axle is a non-driven axle that oscillates on a central pivot pin to maintain all four wheels in contact with the ground over uneven surfaces. This assembly includes the forged steel axle beam, the steering cylinder with chrome-plated rod, the tie rods with greasable ball joints, the kingpins with thrust bearings, and both steering knuckles — all pre-assembled and factory-aligned. The axle beam pivot bushing is a replaceable bronze sleeve pressed into the beam center — this bushing should be inspected and replaced if the pivot pin-to-bushing clearance exceeds 0.15mm, as excessive clearance allows the entire axle to shift during steering transitions.
Complete rear axle replacement is indicated when the axle beam itself is damaged (bent from collision, cracked from fatigue, or the kingpin bores worn oversize) rather than individual component wear. The most critical inspection point is the kingpin bore in the axle beam — these bores carry the kingpin with an interference fit of 0.02-0.04mm, and any bore that has opened beyond 0.06mm clearance will allow the kingpin to work loose under cyclic steering loads, rapidly wearing the bore oval and causing progressively worsening steering free play that cannot be corrected by kingpin replacement alone. The axle beam must also be checked for straightness by measuring the distance between the kingpin centerlines — TCM specification is 860mm ±1mm for FD20-30 models. A bent beam (typically from a forklift being dropped off a loading dock or involved in a side-impact collision) changes the kingpin inclination angle, which alters the steering geometry and causes the forklift to pull to one side during straight-line travel. During installation, the axle pivot pin must be torqued to 250-280 N·m and the pin must be greased through its zerk fitting until grease purges from both ends of the bushing. Common failure symptoms: forklift pulls consistently to one side during straight travel (bent axle beam), excessive steering wheel free play of 25+ degrees (worn kingpin bores in the beam), and a rhythmic thumping noise from the rear of the forklift that matches wheel rotation speed (worn wheel bearings in the knuckle assembly).
This rear axle assembly fits TCM FD20, FD25, and FD30 series 2-3 ton forklifts. Verify your forklift model and the axle beam mounting width before ordering. For related steering axle components and individual replacement parts, visit our Forklift Steering Axle section.
