Forklift Steering Bridge Rear Axle — Complete Steering Assembly for 3-Ton Forklifts
This steering bridge rear axle assembly is a complete, bolt-in replacement unit designed for 3-ton counterbalance forklifts. The “steering bridge” configuration uses a transverse-mounted double-acting hydraulic cylinder with the cylinder body anchored to the axle beam center section and the piston rod connected to both steering knuckles through tie rod linkages — this symmetric layout provides balanced steering effort and equal turning radius in both left and right directions. The axle beam is a forged I-beam construction with integrated kingpin bosses that are induction-hardened to HRC 48-52 for extended service life. The assembly includes the complete steering cylinder with chrome-plated rod (Ra 0.2 micron surface finish), both tie rods with greasable spherical ball joints, kingpin and thrust bearing sets, and both steering knuckles with pre-installed wheel bearings — all factory-assembled and aligned to the correct toe-in specification. This is a universal-fit design compatible with Heli, Hangcha, TCM, and other Chinese-manufactured 3-ton forklifts.
The steering bridge axle operates on a central pivot pin that allows the axle beam to oscillate relative to the chassis — this is the suspension mechanism for the rear axle, as counterbalance forklifts do not have conventional spring suspension. The pivot pin bushing is the primary wear item on a steering bridge axle: the bushing is a replaceable bronze sleeve pressed into the axle beam center, and the bushing-to-pin clearance specification is 0.05-0.12mm when new, with replacement required at 0.20mm. A worn pivot bushing produces a characteristic “rear end wander” where the forklift requires constant steering corrections to maintain a straight line, and in severe cases, the axle beam can contact the chassis frame rails during oscillation, producing a loud metallic clunk. The steering cylinder rod seals are the second most common failure point — the transverse cylinder design inherently side-loads the rod seal during steering because the rod must articulate with the tie rod angular movement. Any detectable oil weepage at the rod seal indicates seal replacement is needed before the leak worsens to the point of affecting steering assist. Common failure symptoms: excessive rear end wander (worn pivot bushing), steering wheel shimmy at 8-12 km/h (combined kingpin and tie rod wear), and hydraulic oil leak from the cylinder rod seal (seal wear from rod side-loading).
This steering bridge axle fits 3-ton forklifts including Heli CPCD30, Hangcha CPCD30, and TCM FD30 models. Verify the chassis mounting width and the axle pivot pin diameter before ordering. For related steering components, visit our Forklift Steering Axle section.
