Forklift Hydraulic Transverse Cylinder Steering Axle — Complete Rear Steering Assembly for 1-5T Forklifts

This steering axle assembly features a hydraulic transverse cylinder design — the steering cylinder is mounted horizontally across the axle beam with the cylinder body fixed to the beam and the piston rod connected to the steering knuckles via tie rod arms. This transverse configuration is the most common steering axle layout for 1-5 ton counterbalance forklifts because it provides symmetrical steering force in both directions and allows the cylinder to be protected behind the axle beam, reducing the risk of impact damage from floor debris. The cylinder is a double-acting design with equal bore area on both sides of the piston, providing balanced steering effort for left and right turns. The assembly includes the forged steel axle beam with integrated cylinder mounting pads, the complete hydraulic cylinder with chrome-plated rod, both tie rods with greasable ball joints, kingpin and thrust bearing sets, and both steering knuckles — all factory-assembled and pre-aligned to the correct toe-in specification of 0-2mm.

The transverse cylinder mounting is the most critical alignment point during axle assembly — the cylinder rod must be centered in its stroke (equal extension on both sides) when the steering knuckles are in the straight-ahead position. If the cylinder is installed off-center by even 3-5mm, the steering will have more turns lock-to-lock in one direction than the other, causing the operator to over-steer in the shorter direction and potentially strike racking or obstacles. This centering is factory-set during assembly and should not require field adjustment unless the tie rods have been replaced. The tie rod ball joints are the primary wear items on the transverse cylinder axle: each ball joint has a spring-loaded socket that compensates for wear up to 0.3mm, after which the joint develops radial play that produces a “clunking” noise during steering direction changes and allows the toe-in setting to vary by 2-4mm as the tie rod oscillates. The ball joints must be greased every 250 operating hours through their zerk fittings — dry ball joints will wear to their replacement limit within 500 hours. Common failure symptoms: steering wheel requires 3 turns in one direction but only 2.5 in the other (cylinder rod not centered), clunking noise during steering direction changes (worn tie rod ball joints), and the forklift pulls to one side when the steering wheel is released (uneven tire wear from incorrect toe-in due to bent tie rod).

This transverse cylinder steering axle fits 1-5 ton forklifts including Heli, Hangcha, TCM, and Komatsu models. Verify the chassis mounting width and cylinder port sizes before ordering. For related steering components, visit our Forklift Steering Axle section.
