Forklift Steering Link 2029624 — OEM Tie Rod Assembly for Hyster J2.50EX 2.5-Ton Forklift

The 2029624 is an OEM steering link (tie rod assembly) for the Hyster J2.50EX series 2.5-ton electric counterbalance forklift. The steering link connects the steering cylinder rod end to the steering knuckle arm, transmitting the hydraulic cylinder’s linear motion into rotational movement of the knuckle around the kingpin axis — this is the final link in the steering chain that turns the wheels. The assembly consists of a forged steel center tube with left-hand and right-hand threaded ball joint ends, allowing the overall length to be adjusted for toe-in setting. Each ball joint uses a hardened steel ball stud (HRC 58-62) seated in a PTFE-lined socket with a preloaded Belleville spring washer that maintains zero lash throughout the joint’s service life — the spring-loaded design automatically compensates for PTFE liner wear up to 0.3mm, after which the joint must be replaced. The ball stud taper is a 1:8 ratio (7.125 degrees included angle) with a 16mm major diameter, which is the standard Hyster steering linkage taper specification used across the J2.0-J3.5 series.

Steering link replacement on a Hyster J2.50EX requires precise toe-in adjustment after installation. The toe-in specification for the J2.50EX is 0-3mm measured at the wheel rim flange (approximately 330mm diameter) — this means the distance between the front of the wheel rims should be 0-3mm less than the distance between the rear of the wheel rims. A toe-in setting outside this range has two consequences: excessive toe-in (more than 5mm) causes the tires to scrub laterally during straight-line travel, producing rapid outer-edge tire wear and increasing steering effort; toe-out (negative toe-in, where the wheels point outward) causes the forklift to “hunt” or wander during straight travel and produces inner-edge tire wear. When adjusting the new steering link, the lock nuts on both ball joint ends must be tightened to 55-65 N-m after the toe-in is set, and the ball joint stud nuts (which secure the tapered studs to the knuckle arm and cylinder rod) must be torqued to 45-50 N-m. The ball joints are equipped with grease zerks and must be greased every 250 operating hours with NLGI #2 lithium grease. Common failure symptoms: clicking or popping noise from the steering axle during low-speed turns (worn ball joint allowing stud movement in the socket), steering wheel free play of 10-15 degrees before wheel movement begins (combined tie rod ball joint wear), and uneven tire wear with a sawtooth pattern (incorrect toe-in from bent or improperly adjusted steering link).

This steering link fits Hyster J2.50EX 2.5-ton electric forklifts. Verify OEM number 2029624 and the ball stud taper dimensions before ordering. For related steering components including cylinder rod ends and knuckle arms, visit our Forklift Steering Axle section.
