When replacing a water separator, always fill the new filter with clean diesel fuel before installation — installing a dry filter can cause the injection pump to run dry for several seconds during startup priming, causing pump wear. Drain the old water separator’s bowl and inspect for excessive water or sediment — if the bowl is more than half full of water, the fuel tank likely has water contamination and should be drained and cleaned. Lubricate the new filter’s O-ring seal with clean diesel fuel before installation — a dry O-ring will twist and tear during tightening, causing an air leak that prevents the engine from starting or causes it to stall under load. Tighten the filter by hand until the seal contacts the housing, then an additional 3/4 turn — do not use a filter wrench for final tightening as over-tightening crushes the seal and causes leaks. After installation, prime the fuel system by operating the manual priming pump (if equipped) until resistance is felt, then start the engine and check for leaks at the filter seal.
