STEERING CYLINDER OPERATION: The forklift steering cylinder is a double-acting hydraulic cylinder with equal bore on both sides of the piston — this provides equal steering force in both left and right directions. When the operator turns the steering wheel, the hydraulic steering orbitrol meters oil flow to one side of the steering cylinder piston while allowing oil to return from the opposite side. The cylinder rod extends or retracts, moving the steering linkage that pivots the rear axle or directly turns the rear wheel spindles. INSTALLATION: Step 1 — Support the forklift safely and turn the rear wheels to the straight-ahead position. Step 2 — Disconnect the hydraulic hoses from both cylinder ports. Step 3 — Remove the cylinder mounting bolts or pins at both the rod end (connected to steering linkage) and the cap end (mounted to the chassis). Step 4 — Extract the old cylinder. Step 5 — Install the new cylinder and secure mounting bolts. Step 6 — Reconnect hydraulic hoses. Step 7 — Bleed air from the steering system by turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock 10-15 times with the engine running. Step 8 — Check for hydraulic leaks at rod seals and port fittings.
