Forklift Brake Drum: Cast Iron Drum Assemblies 24453 A300 30HB for 3-8T Forklifts

The brake drum is the rotating cast iron cylinder that the brake shoes press against to stop the forklift. When the operator presses the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure forces the brake shoes outward against the inner surface of the drum, converting kinetic energy into heat through friction. A worn, cracked, or out-of-round brake drum reduces stopping power, causes brake pedal pulsation, and in severe cases, can fracture under heavy braking — a catastrophic failure on a 5-ton forklift carrying a load downhill. Brake drums have a minimum thickness specification stamped on the casting; machining beyond this limit weakens the drum and risks fracture.

When to Replace Brake Drums:

• Brake pedal pulses or vibrates when braking → Drum is out-of-round or has hard spots from overheating. Machining may correct minor runout; replace if beyond spec
• Visible cracks, heat checking, or blue discoloration on the drum surface → Drum has been overheated. The cast iron has changed metallurgically. Replace
• Drum inner diameter exceeds the maximum specified diameter (stamped on drum) → Drum has been machined to or past its wear limit. Replace
• Deep scoring or grooves on the braking surface that exceed 0.060″ (1.5mm) → Surface damage beyond acceptable machining limits. Replace
• Loud grinding noise during braking → Brake shoes have worn through to the metal backing plate, scoring the drum. Replace drum and shoes together
