The axle shaft is subjected to the highest torsional stress in the entire drivetrain — it must withstand the full engine torque multiplied by the differential gear ratio, plus shock loading when the drive wheel encounters obstacles or when the forklift starts moving with a full load on an incline. A twisted or sheared axle shaft means complete loss of drive to that wheel — the forklift won’t move. A fatigued shaft that hasn’t yet broken will produce a rhythmic clicking or knocking sound from the axle housing that increases with speed.
