Forklift Starter Motor: 12V & 24V QDJ Series Starters for Xinchai 490 Yuchai Diesel Engines

The starter motor is the high-torque DC electric motor that cranks the engine to start it. When the operator turns the key, the starter solenoid engages the pinion gear with the flywheel ring gear and simultaneously closes the high-current contacts that send battery power (typically 200-400 amps) to the starter motor. The motor spins the pinion, which rotates the flywheel and crankshaft until the engine fires. Once the engine starts, the overrunning clutch in the pinion drive allows the pinion to spin freely on the starter shaft, preventing the engine from back-driving and destroying the starter at 2000+ RPM. Forklift starters are typically 12V on smaller engines (Xinchai 490, 0.8-2.2kW) and 24V on larger engines (Yuchai YC4/YC6 series) — the higher voltage provides the additional cranking torque needed for larger displacement diesel engines with higher compression ratios.

When to Replace Starter Motors:
• Engine cranks slowly or won’t crank at all, but battery is fully charged and connections are clean → Starter motor is drawing excessive current (worn bushings, shorted windings). Replace
• Grinding noise during cranking, especially during or after engine start → Starter pinion gear is not meshing properly with the flywheel or the overrunning clutch is slipping. Replace starter before flywheel ring gear damage occurs
• Solenoid clicks but starter motor doesn’t turn → Solenoid contacts are burned or the motor brushes are worn. Replace starter assembly (solenoid and motor together)
• Starter motor spins but doesn’t crank the engine (whirring noise with no engine rotation) → Starter drive (Bendix) is stuck or the overrunning clutch has failed. Replace starter
• Smoke from the starter during extended cranking → Motor windings are overheating from internal short circuit. Stop cranking immediately and replace
